In 2017 the Big Bar slide occurred on the Upper Fraser River blocking passage to Chinook, Coho, and Sockey.  As part of the emergency efforts to restore passage around the slide a temporary adult holding facility was constructed north of the slide at French Creek.  Adults that were trapped at Big Bar were transported by truck on a temporary road Frech Creek and held until genetic test could be ran on the adult to determine what stock it was from, was it listed, and the would be airlifted to a spawning facility or released back into the river.

French Creek Emergency Holding Facility

French Creek is extremely remote and only accessible by boat, helicopter, or traversing a 4-hour long mountain road. There are no utilities or infrastructure at French Creek.  To overcome the lack of utilities everything was operated off diesel generators. A temporary intake was installed in French Creek and all surface water was pump to the headtank.

The site was also located in a flood zone and the entire area had to be raised so operations could continue during high water levels. To further matters the site was culturally sensitive and cultural survey could not be performed prior to construction.  To overcome these issues the entire site was covered in plastic and the temporary was constructed overtop, so once the facility was no longer required it could be removed and the area returned to its original state.
